About Emergency Food and Shelter Program
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) was created by Congress in 1983 to help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people throughout the United States.
The EFSP Program supports nonprofit programs in Rapides Parish by providing funds for food, shelter, and supportive services to individuals and families who have economic emergencies. The funds come through a cooperative arrangement between United Way Worldwide and FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Congress apportions the amount to be distributed each year through this program.
A local EFSP board meets to allocate funds to local agencies as they arrive. United Way of Central Louisiana currently sits as the local board chair.
